Gumi Warns Security Operatives Against Provoking Terrorists After Katsina Peace

Controversial Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has cautioned Nigerian security agencies against provoking armed groups in Katsina State, warning that any misstep could reignite violence in the region. His comments followed a peace meeting between terrorists and residents of Faskari Local Government Area.

In a Facebook post, Gumi stressed the importance of educating the armed groups instead of provoking them, saying, "Some people who don't want peace will provoke them again by attacking them. It's very important to educate them that they are used by capitalising on their ignorance and zeal to vengeance."

The peace meeting held in Faskari brought together community leaders, traditional rulers, and a wanted bandit kingpin, Ado Alero, along with dozens of armed herders. Videos from the meeting showed participants openly armed with rifles and ammunition while engaging in dialogue with residents.

Speaking at the gathering, Alero recounted how tensions with security forces worsened after one of his followers was arrested without explanation, despite efforts to secure his release through both local and state authorities. He described the current initiative as unprecedented, expressing hope that peace could be restored not only in Katsina but across Nigeria.

Also present was a Fulani herder, Kwashé Garwa, who condemned the stereotyping of Fulani as bandits. He insisted that all tribes in Nigeria have criminal elements, but only the Fulani are broadly labeled as terrorists. He warned that such stigmatization fuels resentment and prolongs the cycle of violence.

Garwa added that killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property would only end when justice is served equally across all groups. He urged both federal and state governments to ensure fairness, noting that peace cannot be achieved while security agencies continue targeting their people.
