Growing Number of Americans Believe Israel Has Gone Too Far

Recent polling in the United States reveals a significant shift in public opinion regarding Israel's military campaign in Gaza. As the humanitarian crisis deepens, more Americans are questioning the scale of Israel's response compared to the early stages of the conflict. The findings highlight a growing divide in how different political groups view the war and the US government's role.

According to a nationwide survey conducted by the Associated Press–NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, roughly half of American adults now believe Israel's military response has "gone too far." This marks a notable increase from November 2023, when only 40 percent held that view, shortly after Hamas's October 7 attack triggered the war.

The poll also underscores stark partisan differences. About 70 percent of Democrats now believe Israel has overstepped, compared with 58 percent last year. Among independents, half agree with this assessment, up from 40 percent previously. Republicans, however, remain largely supportive of Israel, with just 24 percent saying the military actions have gone too far — a modest rise from 18 percent.

At the same time, fewer Americans believe brokering a ceasefire should be a top priority for Washington. This decline is most visible among Republicans, who place less emphasis on negotiations, even as the Biden administration continues to balance security support for Israel with calls for humanitarian relief.

The poll highlights a steady demand for humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Forty-five percent of Americans consider such assistance extremely or very important, reflecting slight but consistent growth in public concern over civilian suffering. Even among pro-Israel respondents, many emphasized the need to protect innocent lives in Gaza.

Support for long-term political solutions, such as establishing a Palestinian state, remains relatively low across the spectrum. Democrats show greater interest, with half rating it highly important, while Republicans and independents show minimal enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, enthusiasm for US military aid to Israel has declined sharply. Only 20 percent now view it as very important, compared to 36 percent at the war's outset. This suggests growing skepticism about open-ended support and a rising demand for Washington to prioritize humanitarian and diplomatic efforts.
