Gaza witnessed jubilant scenes on Thursday as residents celebrated the announcement of a long-awaited ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. The breakthrough, brokered after months of bloodshed, offers cautious optimism to millions of Palestinians who have endured relentless bombardments and humanitarian crises. For the first time in years, hope flickers across the besieged enclave that peace may be within reach.

The ceasefire forms the first stage of a broader peace framework based on a 20-point plan introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Under this initial phase, Hamas and allied factions will release 20 Israeli hostages and the remains of 28 others. In return, Israel has agreed to free over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom were arrested since the war reignited in October 2023. Though key disagreements remain, the symbolic agreement signals a pivotal moment in the decades-long conflict.

Leaders across the globe welcomed the development. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman reaffirmed their nations' commitment to ensuring strict implementation of the deal. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and EU officials described the ceasefire as a "ray of light" after months of devastation. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised mediators and urged all parties to respect humanitarian commitments.

For Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a "big day," vowing to bring home captives while thanking international partners for supporting negotiations. Hamas, meanwhile, framed the agreement as the fruit of Palestinian "sacrifices and steadfast resistance," pledging not to abandon the quest for independence and self-determination. Palestinian Islamic Jihad echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the progress was earned through resilience, not concessions.

Regional mediators, including Qatar, Egypt, and Turkiye, played decisive roles during three days of intense talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Their involvement underlines the significance of collective diplomacy in pushing warring parties toward compromise. Analysts believe these coordinated efforts could lay the groundwork for long-term peace if both sides act with sincerity.

While challenges remain, the ceasefire announcement marks a turning point. For millions in Gaza, it revives aspirations for relief, reconstruction, and an eventual political settlement leading to a sovereign Palestinian state. Whether this moment becomes a lasting milestone or another fleeting pause in violence depends on the will of leaders—and the resilience of people longing for peace.
