Gaza’s Children Struggle Amid War While Clinging To Education

For the third consecutive year, while students worldwide return to classrooms with backpacks and supplies, children in Gaza navigate a landscape marked by destruction and uncertainty. Their journeys to school are fraught with danger, and their futures remain deeply uncertain, as the effects of conflict continue to overshadow daily life.

According to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), nearly 660,000 school-age children in Gaza have been deprived of formal education since October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel prompted a major Israeli military response. The disruption has left generations of young learners struggling to maintain continuity in their education.

For most Gazan families, basic survival has become the overriding concern. "Families have been uprooted 10, even 15 times. Their main focus is on food, water, clothing, and sleep," said Issa Saaba, director of the Canaan Institute of New Pedagogy in Gaza. Education, though valued, is often secondary to immediate life-saving needs.

Displacement has affected more than 90 percent of Gaza's 2.2 million residents. Families have sought refuge in tents, UNRWA schools, and damaged hospitals, many of which have sustained significant war-related destruction. The constant movement and lack of stable infrastructure exacerbate the challenges of learning and personal development.

Despite the pervasive hardships, children in Gaza continue to pursue education whenever possible. Schools and informal learning centers, even amid damage and overcrowding, remain critical spaces where children can regain a sense of normalcy and hope.

"Health and education have never been abandoned," Saaba emphasized, highlighting the resilience of both families and institutions in Gaza. Even under extreme adversity, the pursuit of knowledge persists as a beacon of hope, illustrating the enduring human spirit and the vital importance of education in sustaining communities through conflict.
