The Chief Imam of Uromi Central Mosque, Muhammad Murtadha Obhakhobo, has revealed a stark truth about his recent freedom. Contrary to police claims, he was not rescued but gained his liberty by paying a significant N6.5 million ransom to his abductors. This disclosure challenges official narratives surrounding his release.

The Imam was kidnapped on July 9, 2025, along the Ubiaja-Illushi road in Edo State. Reports initially indicated his captors demanded a hefty N30 million. His family and community were in distress, seeking his safe return during this harrowing period.

CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, had issued a statement claiming the cleric's release resulted from "sustained pressure" from the police. This official statement painted a picture of law enforcement success in securing his freedom.

However, in an interactive session with journalists, Chief Imam Obhakhobo directly refuted the police's account. He stated, "I got myself released by paying N6.5 million on July 13, but I was shocked to read in the news that I was rescued by the police."

He further explained that after his return, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Uromi visited him for information, which he provided. Despite sharing the details of his ransom payment, he was surprised to see the police attempting to take credit for an operation they were not involved in.

The Imam made it clear: "My release was as a result of private efforts and the payment of substantial ransom and not the efforts of the police." He expressed gratitude to those who offered prayers and support during his captivity, highlighting the community's role in his ordeal.
