Dog Walking Ban Expands Across Iran Amid Health Concerns

Iran is increasing restrictions on walking dogs in public. The ban, originally enforced in Tehran in 2019, is now spreading to many cities across the country, including Ilam, Isfahan, and Kerman.

Authorities say the ban protects public health, order, and safety. Officials believe dog walking in public disturbs peace and may influence local culture in unwanted ways.

Religious and cultural beliefs also play a role. Some Islamic scholars consider dogs impure, and others view dog ownership as a symbol of Western influence, which they seek to limit.

Dog ownership is not illegal in Iran, but walking dogs in public or transporting them openly in vehicles is now often restricted by local rules.

These bans are not always enforced strictly, and many pet owners continue to walk their dogs despite the rules.

Officials warn that those who break the law may face legal action as enforcement efforts increase.
