Etiquette Of Using The Bathroom in Islam

Islam provides guidance even in private matters like using the bathroom, emphasizing modesty, cleanliness, and remembrance of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught specific etiquettes that elevate this daily routine into an act of worship.

Before entering the bathroom, one should recite:

"Bismillah, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith."
"In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from male and female devils."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (142), Sahih Muslim (375)

The Prophet ﷺ would enter with his left foot and exit with his right, saying upon leaving:

"Ghufranak."
"I seek Your forgiveness."
— Sunan Abu Dawud (30)

Islam strongly prohibits facing or turning one's back toward the Qiblah when relieving oneself in open areas. It also forbids using the right hand for cleaning oneself, out of respect, as narrated by Salman al-Farisi (RA):

"The Prophet ﷺ forbade us from facing the Qiblah while defecating... and from cleaning with the right hand."
— Sahih Muslim (262)

The Sahaba adhered strictly to these etiquettes, understanding that purity is half of faith (Sahih Muslim, 223). Observing bathroom manners preserves dignity, hygiene, and spiritual mindfulness, even in the most private moments.
