Respecting the Young in Islam

Islam promotes mercy, care, and nurturing attitudes toward the young. Children and youth are seen as a trust (amānah) from Allah and should be raised with compassion, dignity, and love.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a role model in this regard. He said:

"لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا وَيَعْرِفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا"
"He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and respect to our elders."
— Sunan At-Tirmidhi (1919)

He would greet children with smiles, carry them on his shoulders, and pray while holding his granddaughter. Once, when Hasan and Husayn (RA) climbed on his back during sujood, he prolonged the prayer out of kindness.

The Qur'an emphasizes gentleness in teaching and guiding:

وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًۭا
"And speak kindly to people."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83)

The Sahaba reflected this etiquette. Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) taught his sons with gentleness and encouraged youth to seek knowledge early. Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) would mentor younger companions and uplift their confidence.

Respecting the young means listening to them, encouraging their growth, and guiding them patiently — creating a future generation rooted in faith and love.
