Sleep is a mercy from Allah and an opportunity to rest, reflect, and renew one's intention. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught specific etiquettes for sleeping that bring spiritual and physical benefit.

Before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would make wudu' (ablution):

"When you go to bed, perform ablution as for prayer..."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (247) & Muslim (2710)

He would lie on his right side, placing his hand under his cheek, and recite:

"Bismika Allahumma amootu wa ahya" (In Your name, O Allah, I die and live).
— Sahih al-Bukhari (6320)

He also encouraged reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas, and blowing over the body — a habit Aisha (RA) reported he never missed.

Upon waking, he would say:

"Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushoor."
"Praise is to Allah Who gave us life after death, and unto Him is the resurrection."
— Sahih al-Bukhari (6312)

The companions (Sahaba) like Ibn Umar (RA) were strict in following these sunnahs, seeing sleep not just as rest, but an act of worship.

Following these etiquettes brings barakah (blessing) in sleep and strengthens one's connection with Allah daily.
