A Sharia Court sitting in Kano State has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Sabiu Abdullahi, to 50 strokes of cane after he was found guilty of stealing five roofing sheets. The judgment was delivered on Friday, August 1, following the defendant's admission of guilt.

The incident happened at Mariri Quarters, Kano, where the defendant lives. He was charged with criminal trespass and theft, which violates Sections 134 and 287 of the Kano State Penal Code Law. Sabiu openly confessed to the crime during the court hearing.

According to the prosecution, Zahradeen Abubakar, a formal complaint was filed by Anas Yakubu, a resident of Tamburawa Quarters. He reported the case to the Mariri Police Station on July 21 after discovering that some roofing materials were missing from his residence.

The prosecutor told the court that Sabiu had broken into the complainant's home while he was away and unlawfully took away five roofing sheets. The stolen items were later confirmed as missing by the complainant.

After reviewing the case, Judge Malam Umar Lawal declared the defendant guilty and ordered corporal punishment according to Islamic legal provisions. The judge ruled that Sabiu receive 50 lashes as a corrective measure under the Sharia justice system.

This ruling reflects the strict stance of Kano's Sharia Court on theft and trespass and aims to discourage such behavior in the community by enforcing moral discipline based on Islamic law.
