The Islamic rights group MURIC has called on Nigerian security agencies to keep a close eye on masquerade activities. They warned that such cultural events, if not properly monitored, could spark violence and lead to religious tension in local communities.

Their concern is particularly directed at the Ololu Masquerade Festival, which is expected to begin on Monday, July 28, in Ibadan. MURIC said several reports from local sources suggest the festival could become a flashpoint for unrest if precautions are not taken.

The organisation stressed that celebrations like these should not turn into opportunities for harassment or intimidation of people from other faiths. They urged community leaders to discourage any act that could create conflict or division among residents.

MURIC also appealed to the Oyo State Government and all relevant security bodies to take proactive steps. They emphasized that every citizen—whether Muslim, Christian, or traditionalist—deserves equal protection under the law.

The group insisted that it is the duty of the government to guarantee safety during such public events. They stated clearly that religious freedom must never be compromised by cultural displays.

Finally, MURIC advised Muslim communities in Oyo State to remain calm and law-abiding. While they await government response, the group urged all Muslims to avoid confrontations and continue to promote peace and understanding among all religious groups.
