Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for an attack. They stated that 200 soldiers were killed at a Burkina Faso military base in Djibo. The assault occurred on a Sunday morning.

Security sources reported that hundreds of fighters overran and destroyed the military base. JNIM also reportedly targeted a police station and a market in the northern town. The SITE Intelligence Group confirmed JNIM's claim of the attack.

Initially, the reported Burkinabe death toll was around 60 soldiers. However, SITE later stated that the terrorist group increased the claimed death toll to 200. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the Burkina Faso government regarding the attack or the casualty figures.

SITE also mentioned that Ousmane Dicko, the head of JNIM in Burkina Faso, appeared in a video. He reportedly urged residents of Djibo to leave the town for their safety due to the ongoing militant activities in the Sahel region.

Militant attacks have been increasing in Sahelian countries. JNIM recently claimed multiple attacks in Burkina Faso. This occurred while the junta leader, Ibrahim Traore, visited Russia and met with President Vladimir Putin.
