Boko Haram jihadists killed over 17 fishermen and farmers in Malam Karanti village, Borno State, allegedly for supporting ISWAP, with many more kidnapped and the death toll expected to rise.

The attack is the latest in the region's long-running insurgency, with Boko Haram and ISWAP locked in in-fighting since their split in 2016 over ideological differences and territory control.

Boko Haram now controls Lake Chad and is wary of ISWAP's potential comeback, according to militia leader Babakura Kolo, who said the group targets those perceived to support their rivals.

The assailants attacked fishermen and farmers tending to their crops along Lake Chad's shores, with both Boko Haram and ISWAP accusing civilians of spying and passing information to the military.
