Tragedy struck Katsina State on Tuesday morning as heavily armed bandits attacked a mosque in Unguwan Mantau, Malumfashi Local Government Area, killing thirteen worshippers during the early dawn (Fajr) prayer. The unexpected assault left the community in shock and mourning.

According to reports, the attackers stormed the mosque and opened fire on innocent worshippers while prayers were ongoing. Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Muazu, confirmed the incident in an official statement, describing it as a deadly reprisal attack.

He explained that the attack was retaliation after local residents successfully defended themselves against bandits just two days earlier, where several criminals were reportedly killed in an ambush set by the community. The reprisal, however, tragically claimed the lives of peaceful worshippers.

Security agencies have since been deployed to the affected area to restore order and prevent further violence. The Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Police have launched operations around Malumfashi to track down the perpetrators. Authorities noted that during the rainy season, bandits often use crops and farmlands as hideouts.

Dr. Muazu commended the bravery of Unguwan Mantau residents in standing up against criminal elements but emphasized the government's commitment to eradicating banditry across Katsina. He assured citizens that ongoing military operations will continue until lasting peace is achieved.

Meanwhile, the state government extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and promised continuous support for community-based security initiatives. Efforts remain focused on strengthening security, rebuilding trust, and ensuring safety in all parts of Katsina State.
